Cyprus GeographyWhy with Regency Car Hire Cyprus? Geography of Cyprus: Situated in the far eastern Mediterranean Sea, Cyprus sits precariously between Greece and Cyprus, at a cross-roads between Asia and Europe which has heavily influenced the country’s 2500 year modern history. To the east is Syria and to the South Egypt. Click on image to enlarge map Cyprus is actually divided in two parts- the so called "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, (recognized only by Turkey) and the Republic of Cyprus, (recognized worldwide) which attracts most the visitors. There are two large mountain ranges on the island: the mainly limestone Kyrenian Range in North Cyprus and the volcanic-formed Troodos Mesaoria Plains separate the two. The Akamas peninisula the west is interesting and unspoilt.
The south coasts support the bulk of tourism, with several well developed resort towns along the pleasant south coast. Beaches and lovely bays are plentiful, while the west is more rural and rugged. Millions of years of isolation has resulted in many unique Cypriot species, particularly plants, found nowhere else in the world. There are three main habitats in Cyprus: the mountain ranges, the coastal plains and the cultivated lands. Citrus orchards and tourism development have been responsible for displacing fauna which can now only been seen infrequently in the mountainous areas of the island and the Akamas Peninsula. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
